Lorenz's HOA Yard Sign Restriction Legislation Heard in House Committee
COLUMBUS— State Representative Brian Lorenz (R-Powell) has introduced legislation to the House State and Local Government Committee that will prohibit homeowner’s associations from restricting the display of political yard signs.
Under current law homeowners, neighborhood, civic and other associations are prohibited from enacting bylaws that place restrictions on the display of certain flags. Lorenz’s legislation would expand these protections to political yard signs if the signs are displayed accord to state and local laws and do not violate state or federal hate crime laws.
“This is a free speech issue,” said Lorenz. “Sometimes HOAs can become overzealous and overstep their bounds. This legislation will ensure people’s rights to support their party or candidate of choice are protected with the same level of protection as speech or expression outside of politics.”
The legislation awaits additional hearings in the committee.
