Bird Testifies on Legislation Honoring the Armed Forces
COLUMBUS –State Representative Adam Bird (R-New Richmond) yesterday testified on legislation which would designate April 9th as “Yellow Ribbon Day,” in an effort to show support for the armed services and their families.
On April 9th, 2004, Army Staff Sergeant Keith Matthew “Matt” Maupin of Batavia became the first American Prisoner of War in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Staff Sergeant Maupin was tragically killed in captivity, but his legacy lives on through his family and his unforgettable bravery.
The yellow ribbon is seen as a symbol of support for those serving in the armed forces and their family members and is often tied to trees or worn on clothing. As such, Bird and his joint-sponsor, State Representative Scott Lipps (R-Franklin) wanted to not only honor Staff Sergeant Maupin, but all active duty service members, soldiers killed or missing in action, POWs, and their families with this designation.
“I am extremely proud to have worked on this bill not just for the incredible men and women who have served our country, but their families,” Bird said. “This is just one small way for us to honor the sacrifice of these extraordinarily brave people.”
After his testimony, House Bill 741 passed the House Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Committee and now heads to the House floor for a vote.
