COLUMBUS – State Representative Adam Bird (R-New Richmond) today announced that the Aberdeen House Project in Brown County was awarded $457,100 in a Brownfield Remediation Grant.

The Aberdeen School House has served several purposes, housing a high school, a middle school, and the Aberdeen Police Department. Over the last couple of decades, it has become unstable and unhealthy. It has been deemed unsafe and is now vacant.

“I am glad to see this funding make its way back to Brown County, specifically to restore the area where the former Aberdeen School House resides,” Bird said. “There comes a time when it is vital to revitalize such areas and allow them to serve a new purpose.”

The program is a product of House Bill 110, the Ohio State Operating Budget, which Bird supported last year. The legislation included a total of $350 million for brownfield remediation across the state.

The most recent round of grant funding included $88 million for 123 brownfield remediation projects that serve to clean up hazardous or unused sites throughout Ohio and help to restore growth in the area. The village of Aberdeen plans to restore the property into a green space.
