COLUMBUS – State Rep. Scott Wiggam (R-Wayne County) today announced his petition to encourage the Senate to initiate the override of the governor’s veto of Substitute Senate Bill 311 was journalized in the Ohio House Clerk’s Office.

Senate Bill 311 would establish legislative oversight over orders issued by the Ohio Department of Health, during a state of emergency, through the adoption of a concurrent resolution.

“This bill will establish legislative oversight over health orders coming from the Governor’s office. This bill does not prohibit the governor from taking action. Instead, after the Governor issues an order, the legislature is able to review it by bringing in additional experts through a transparent public hearing, where we can ensure that the people’s voice is heard.” said Wiggam.

The petition, which was submitted yesterday, December 23, 2020, has 60 Republican signatures with the intent to vote in favor of overriding the Governor’s veto. It states the following:

“Pursuant to House Rule 5, and in accordance with Article II, Section 16 of the Ohio Constitution, we, the undersigned members of the Ohio House of Representatives, declare our intention to override the Governor’s veto of Substitute Senate Bill 311 and hereby petition the Ohio Senate to initiate the override of the Governor’s veto of Substitute Senate Bill 311, as the house of origin, in order for the members of the Ohio House of Representatives to vote to override the Governor’s veto of Substitute Senate Bill Number 311.”
