Ohio House Passes Bill to Recognize Genetic Disorder that Affects Nervous System

The Ohio House of Representatives has passed House Bill 533, legislation that designates May as “Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month.”

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder in which tumors form in the nervous system, such as the brain and spinal cord. It typically is diagnosed by early adulthood, can sometimes become cancerous and can result in hearing loss, learning impairment, loss of vision and severe pain.

“Neurofibromatosis affects many individuals throughout Ohio, but it’s not a very well-known disorder,” said Representative Sprague (R-Findlay), who sponsored the legislation. “House Bill 533 will bring awareness to this serious genetic disorder, and I appreciate the unanimous support from House members to bring awareness throughout our state.”

The bill now awaits consideration by the Ohio Senate.
