Oelslager Provides Legislative Update from Ohio House

COLUMBUS—The Ohio House of Representatives was recently successful in passing a number of important pieces of legislation, announced Speaker Pro Tempore Scott Oelslager (R-North Canton).
Each bill is highlighted below:
- Supports Ohio Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial (89-0): House Concurrent Resolution 5 will support the work of the Ohio 250 Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, which celebrates the nation’s 250th anniversary.
- Higher Education Return on Investment Act (88-1): House Bill 27 will help graduating seniors and their families access to financial information necessary for success while highlighting the great value of our state institutions through marketing resources.
- Designates Triple Negative Breast Cancer Month (87-1): House Bill 28 will bring awareness to Triple Negative Breast Cancer by designating the month of March as Triple Negative Breast Cancer Month.
- Creates a mechanism to allow relief collateral sanction for housing (81-8): House Bill 50 will establish certificates of qualification for housing that will assist individuals with criminal records overcome housing barriers due to collateral sanctions and housing bars.
- Indexing the Homestead Exemption to Inflation Act (89-0): House Bill 57 will index the homestead exemption to inflation, decreasing inflationary risk for seniors and disabled veterans.
- Designates James A. Garfield Day (89-0): House Bill 61 will make November 19th, President Garfield’s Birthday, “James A. Garfield Day.”
- Provides Bad Debt Relief for Wholesalers (85-3): House Bill 66 will allow wholesalers experiencing “bad debt” to claim a refund from the state for the tax they pay up front when they are unable to obtain reimbursement from a retailer.
- Regards filing of municipal income tax returns (88-0): House Bill 105 will update municipal income tax law to protect taxpayers from excessive late penalties and notices.
These House bills await consideration by the Ohio Senate.
