Gross Introduces the Better Access, Better Care Act
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) has introduced House Bill 221, legislation that aims to improve healthcare outcomes by modifying the laws governing the practice for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN).
“By reducing regulations for APRNs, Ohio can increase access to vital healthcare services while still maintaining a high quality of care,” said Gross.
Current law requires an APRN, who is a certified nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or certified nurse-midwife, to practice with a standard care arrangement with a collaborating physician or podiatrist. H.B. 221 allows an APRN who has completed 2,000 clinical practice hours under a standard care arrangement the option to practice without such an arrangement.
Additionally, the bill allows an APRN who has not completed the required hours to enter into a standard care arrangement with an APRN who has completed 2,000 clinical practice hours.
“My hope is that this legislation will reduce overall Medicaid costs by increasing opportunities for healthcare homes, which will improve preventive health access,” added Gross.
The measure is joint-sponsored with State Rep. Tom Brinkman (R-Mt. Lookout). It now awaits referral to a House committee.
