Rep. Kelly celebrates as HB 308 extending coverage for PTSD to first responders becomes law
State Rep. Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati) today announced that House Bill (HB) 308, legislation to allow first responders diagnosed with work-related PTSD in the absence of any physical injury to qualify for BWC compensation and benefits, was signed into law Jan. 9 by the governor. This is something Democrats have prioritized in recent General Assemblies.
“Ensuring that Ohio’s first responders who are struggling with PTSD have access to workers’ compensation is a huge victory,” said Rep. Kelly. “First responders risk their well-being every day to serve our communities; it is crucial to provide them with the compensation and benefits they need to be healthy and well.”
HB 308 makes first responders, such as peace officers, firefighters, and emergency medical workers, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder arising from their employment eligible for compensation and benefits under Ohio's Workers' Compensation Law. The individual does not need to have an accompanying injury to be eligible.
The legislation will take effect 90 days from the day it was signed into law.
