State Rep. Dan Ramos (D-Lorain) today praised the enactment of House Bill (HB) 523, bi-partisan legislation that authorizes the prescribed use of medical marijuana in Ohio and the creation of the Medical Marijuana Control Program. With the bill’s passage in May, Ohio became the 25th state to legalize marijuana for medical consumption.

“HB 523 represents bipartisan compromise and a thorough process that included hours of public hearings and input from medical professionals, patients, business owners and concerned citizens” said Ramos. “There is still much work that needs to be done, but today marks a very important step toward relief for many suffering Ohioans.”

The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program will establish specific rules and guidelines for the cultivation, processing, testing, dispensing and medical use of marijuana. Patients who have medical conditions such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, various cancers, and other chronic illnesses will be eligible for certain prescribed uses of marijuana.

Rep. Ramos served as ranking member on the Select Committee on Medical Marijuana and was also a founding member of the Medical Marijuana Task Force—the group instrumental in crafting HB 523.
