Johnson celebrates International Women's Day with call to action
As the world celebrates “International Women’s Day,” an annual event recognized by the United Nations to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, Rep. Greta Johnson (D-Akron) today called for meaningful state action on issues of gender equality.
“On this day we recognize the courageous actions of women throughout American history who fought tirelessly for fair wages and the right to vote,” said Johnson. “A century later, we are still demanding equal pay for equal work and social and political justice for women. As a state lawmaker, I pledge to build upon the legacy of the brave women who came before me by fighting for gender equality here in Ohio.”
According to a report by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, women in Ohio are not projected to earn equal pay until 2066. In fact, the same report also ranked Ohio 27th in reproductive rights, 30th in poverty and opportunity measures, and 39th in women’s health and well-being.
“Ultimately, these are not women’s issues – these are Ohio’s issues, and we cannot move our state forward without bridging the gender gap and empowering Ohio women,” said Johnson. “I will continue to advocate for legislation to improve women’s economic opportunities, access to justice, and access to healthcare until there is true gender equality in our state.”
Rep. Johnson serves as Vice Chairman to the Ohio House Democratic Women’s Caucus (OHDWC). The mission of the Ohio House Democratic Women's Caucus is:
-To develop and pass policies and legislation that improve the lives of Ohio women and their families.
-To identify and support emerging women leaders by serving as mentors.
-To educate and empower women and increase women's involvement in public life and in the Ohio General Assembly.
