House Democrats applaud second chance to draw fair, constitutional state legislative maps that better reflect Ohio
COLUMBUS —Assistant Minority Leader Kristin Boggs (D-Columbus) today issued a statement after the Ohio Supreme Court struck down the state House and Senate legislative maps.
“Ohioans spoke not once, but twice, to demand fair maps. Now we have heard from the highest Court. We have another chance to produce fair maps for Ohio, and there is no reason why we can’t adopt fair, 1o-year state legislative maps that meet the constitutional requirements Ohio voters have demanded. Having fair maps means that Ohioans will have better representation, stronger communities, and a more functional legislature and state government.”
The state legislative maps passed by the Ohio Redistricting Commission in September along a 5-2 party line vote were ruled unconstitutional because they did not comply with the core anti-gerrymandering provision of the Ohio Constitution. New 10-year state legislative maps would require the support of four out of seven Commission members, including both Democrats.
