Richardson Supports the Adoption Modernization Act
COLUMBUS – State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) has voted to help provide homes for Ohio’s children with the passing of the Adoption Modernization Act.
The legislation will modernize and streamline the adoption process in Ohio, while simultaneously prioritizing the best interest of the child.
“Every child in Ohio deserves to live in a safe and loving home,” said Richardson. “This legislation will remove unnecessary red tape and create consistency across Ohio counties, improving the adoption process. These improvements will ensure more children have the care and foundation they need to grow into happy and healthy individuals.”
Key provisions of the bill are as follows:
- Expedites kinship care by allowing time spent in the home of a family member to be counted towards the six-month waiting period before adoption. This language mirrors current Ohio law for foster-to-adopt scenarios.
- Increases financial support for expecting mothers from $3,000 to $6,000 for living expenses.
- Clarifies the Ohio Revised Code to help streamline the adoption process.
According to data published by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, there are currently almost 15,000 Ohio children living outside of the care of their parents. About 3,000 of them are awaiting adoption.
The Adoption Modernization Act now heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
