COLUMBUS – State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) has introduced a resolution urging Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

Introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, the SAVE Act will protect and preserve the right of American citizens to vote by requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship when an individual registers to vote and will require states to remove non-citizens from existing voter registries.

“It is critical that Congress act now to uphold the sacred right and responsibility of American citizens to vote,” Richardson said.  “Across the country, this right is being infringed upon by allowing non-citizens to vote in our elections and influence the results. This not only threatens the rights of our constituents, but the integrity and security of our beloved nation.”

Individuals can provide a U.S. passport, military ID card, government-issued ID card, certified birth certificate, adoption decree, Naturalization Certificate or American Indian Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security to prove their citizenship.

The resolution, H.C.R. 18, has not yet been assigned to a House committee.
