Wiggam Praises Passing of Constitution Protecting Legislation
COLUMBUS – State Representative Scott Wiggam (R-Wayne County) praises the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 2 by the Ohio House of Representatives to give Ohioans a voice in the fight against outside special interest groups interfering with Ohio’s constitution.
“Senate Joint Resolution 2 is the ultimate representation of good government,” said Wiggam. “The Ohio Constitution is not up for sale. This legislation is a statement against outside sources spending large sums of money to enact their will on our founding document. We must protect the interest of the many in this state from the actions of a few. Ultimately, it will be up to the people of Ohio whether they want to protect our constitution from this type of extremist behavior.”
“There are only a handful of states that allow citizen petitions with a threshold as low as Ohio’s,” Wiggam continued. “This resolution will install the safeguards needed to protect our constitution once and for all. Ohio is not a doormat for special interest groups to come-a-knocking.”
SJR 2 will alter the process of how constitutional amendments can be proposed by initiative petitions. Currently, issues proposed by initiative petitions need to meet a 50% voting threshold to amend the constitution. Under this new proposal, these issues would need to meet a 60% threshold.
The resolution will be voted upon in a special election in August.
