Upcoming Deadline for Menstrual Product Dispenser in Schools Funding Announced by Rep. Grim
COLUMBUS- State Rep. Michele Grim (D-Toledo) Tuesday announced that schools serving female students in grades 6-12 have until September 15th to submit a request for menstrual product dispenser funding. Schools will be required to provide free period products using state funding starting Tuesday, October 3rd. This $5 million initiative was included in the adopted state budget, House Bill (HB) 33. During the development of the House version of the budget, Rep. Grim was a passionate supporter of providing menstrual products in schools.
“I would like to encourage all schools across Ohio who serve female students in grades 6-12 to take the steps to apply for this funding. Placing dispensers in accessible locations is a great way to ensure students are aware of this resource. No student should be distracted from a day of learning because they are worried about not having the appropriate menstrual product,” said Rep. Grim.
Product dispensers come in a variety of options such as:
- Mechanical wall units;
- Countertop baskets;
- Freestanding storage drawers.
Schools can also choose to provide a myriad of period products and choices for their students, such as: tampons, panty liners, sanitary napkins. Schools may also choose to provide guidance on how to use and dispose of period products, in accordance with the student's age. Over 476,000 female students will be impacted by this new requirement.
