Rep. Grim Announces Safety Upgrades for Local Railroad Crossings

July 17, 2024
Michele Grim News

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Michele Grim (D-Toledo) today announced the release of more than $1M by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) for safety improvements at four Ohio rail crossings. These funds will be used to purchase and install flashing lights and gates with cantilevers to warn traffic of an oncoming train.

“I am pleased at PUCO’s release of more than $1M dollars for improving safety infrastructure at rail crossings. Rail safety, for drivers, pedestrians and rail workers alike, must continue to be a priority for PUCO and the Ohio General Assembly. Active warning devices for crossings are proven to significantly decrease the number of crashes,” said Rep. Grim, ranking member on the House Transportation Committee. “I, along with colleagues on both sides of the aisle, will continue to fight for common sense rail safety solutions, such as House Bill 372.”

House Bill (HB) 372, a bipartisan bill, would require operators of motor vehicles to stop, look, and listen for on-track equipment when approaching railroad crossings. HB 372 passed the House with overwhelming support in May of this year. It now awaits further hearings in the Ohio Senate Transportation Committee.

To increase public safety during the construction of the project, local governments may seek funding from the PUCO for the cost of safety improvements such as rumble strips, illumination, improved signage or other enhancements at the project location.
