COLUMBUS- State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced $192,382 in state funds from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Clean Ohio Trails Fund has been awarded to the City of Youngstown to connect Youngstown State University (YSU) with Wick Park.

“Connecting the different parts of a city is vital to the overall health of a community,” said Rep. McNally. “I applaud the city of Youngstown for continuing to create opportunities for connections like this one. I know this will add value to all the other work going on in the Downtown/Northside corridor.”

The $192,382 funding will support a connection between YSU and the following:

  1.  Wick Park, described as a regional recreational asset
  2.  Vital workers
  3.  Recently completed sharrows/protected bike lanes on 5th
  4.  State Bicycle Route 70

It also connects the bicycle deficient zone (TIMS) with other municipalities with existing and planned routes of connection to Youngstown, Boardman, and Niles (the Great Ohio Lake-to-River Greenway).

“I’m excited about this connection and all the people in our area who will benefit from it once completed,” said Rep. McNally.

The Clean Ohio Trails Fund has awarded nearly $112 million in state funds to improve access to recreational opportunities through the creation of trails. Administered by ODNR, the fund is one of three components of the Clean Ohio Fund, which seeks to restore, protect, and connect Ohio’s natural and urban places. The grant received by Youngstown is part of the 17th round of funding awarded through the program since 2000.
