House Committee Passes Bill to Designate Ottawa County Veterans Memorial Highway
COLUMBUS— The House Transportation Committee today passed House Bill 335, legislation to designate a portion of State Route 163 in Ottawa County as Ottawa County Veterans Memorial Highway, announced bill sponsor, State Rep. D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron).
Swearingen specifically cites the historic events that took place on September 10, 1813, during which nine vessels under the command of Commodore Oliver Perry defeated six vessels from Great Britain’s Royal Navy near Put-In-Bay on Lake Erie. Additionally, over 3,000 veterans currently call Ottawa County home.
“Renaming this highway helps keep the memories and sacrifices of thousands of brave men and women alive,” said Swearingen. “Their stories serve as a testament to their heroism and the fortitude of Ohioans as a whole.”
House Bill 335 now heads to the House floor for a vote.
