State Reps. Beth Liston (D-Dublin) and Tavia Galonski (D-Akron) today introduced legislation that would create health education standards for students in Ohio. Currently, Ohio is the only state in the nation that does not have statewide health education standards.

“Although Ohioans are struggling with so many health issues, our state ranks near the bottom in all measures of wellness,” said Rep. Liston. “Ohio’s students deserve to learn about important things like nutrition, exercise, drugs and fighting disease. This bill will help provide our kids the tools they need to live happier, healthier lives."

The bill would require Ohio’s Board of Education to adopt health standards based on the existing National Health Education Standards and implement these standards by July 1st, 2020.

Health education standards serve as an outline for creating curricula for health education. They provide benchmarks for what students should know about personal, family and community health by certain grade levels.
