COLUMBUS — The Ohio Democratic Women’s Legislative Caucus (ODWLC) today celebrates the House passage of House Bill (HB) 244, sponsored by State Reps. Michele Grim (D-Toledo) and Beryl Brown Piccolantonio (D-Gahanna).

“Women have always played a central role in Ohio’s history, even when their stories were left out of the spotlight. House Bill 244 helps ensure those contributions are recognized and preserved,” said Rep. Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus), Chair of ODWLC. “Creating a permanent Women’s History Month in Ohio gives schools, communities, and cultural institutions the tools to highlight the women who’ve shaped our state—and make sure future generations know that history.”

The legislation designates March as Women’s History Month.

“This designation honors the accomplishments of women from every corner of Ohio—from the foothills of Appalachia to the shores of Lake Erie. Their strength, compassion, and determination define the diverse communities that make our state unique,” said Rep. Grim.

“Establishing Women’s History Month in Ohio law would create a stronger framework for celebrating and honoring the extraordinary contributions of women throughout our state’s history. HB 244 ensures all Ohioans have the chance to learn about the diverse legacies of women who have shaped our state, which could strengthen community ties and foster a sense of pride in our state’s history,” said Rep. Brown Piccolantonio, Vice Chair of ODWLC. “An Ohio Women’s History Month would serve as a powerful educational resource, offering schools, museums, libraries, and cultural organizations the opportunity to bring the stories of local women to life. As we prepare to mark America’s two hundred and fiftieth anniversary, now is the perfect time to ensure that these extraordinary stories are taught and celebrated year after year, inspiring future generations to dream bigger, break barriers, and make their own mark.”

HB 244 will now head to the Senate for consideration.

The mission of the Ohio Democratic Women's Legislative Caucus is to develop and pass policies and legislation that improve the lives of Ohio women and their families; to identify and support emerging women leaders by serving as mentors; to educate and empower women and increase women's involvement in public life and in the Ohio General Assembly.
