Reps. Miller and Sobecki introduce legislation to increase funding for libraries
COLUMBUS— State Reps. Lisa Sobecki (Toledo) and Adam C. Miller (Columbus) today announced the introduction of the legislation that would increase funding for Ohio’s public libraries as they adapt and change to COVID-19 and 21st century technology and needs. House Bill (HB) 773 calls for creating an addition library fund from the State’s Local Government Fund. The fund will be available to all libraries that currently receive the PLF that are working to adapt to the current pandemic and needs of Ohio’s libraries and patrons.
“Libraries are ‘Houses of Knowledge,’ and continue to play an increased role in education, community engagement, and social and workforce development,” said Rep. Sobecki. “It is time to recognize the importance of the modern library in the 21st Century.”
“Libraries across Ohio continue to innovate and adapt to ever changing needs and technology,” said Rep. Miller. “Now with a pandemic and health and safety front and center, libraries need the support to provide services now and in the future. We can’t continue to ask them – again and again - to do more with less.”
Libraries may use the additional funding for uses including:
- Health and safety
- Modernization
- After School programs
- Cultural programs
- Workforce development
- Community engagement
- Technology improvements
- Innovation
- Language services
- Literacy programs
HB 773 has not yet been referred to a House committee for initial hearings.
