Rep. Blackshear Issues Statement Following Unsubstantiated Claims, Xenophobic Lies Towards Haitian Immigrants in Springfield
COLUMBUS - State Rep. Willis Blackshear (D-Dayton) today released the following statement as prominent national and statewide politicians continue to spread unverified rumors about Haitian immigrants “eating the pets” in neighboring Springfield, Ohio:
“The situation in Springfield is a disturbing one that requires real leadership. Unfortunately, that isn’t what we are seeing from cynical politicians like JD Vance, Bernie Moreno, and Dave Yost, who are more interested in stoking divides, repeating divisive lies, and fueling violence. Instead of fear mongering through false conspiracies and chasing political headlines, local leaders have debunked myths and led efforts to safely and efficiently assimilate parents, children, and workers,” said Rep. Blackshear. “When we demonize legal immigrants that come to our communities to fill gaps in the workforce, provide to our economy and contribute to society, we chip away at the founding principles of America. Enough is enough. Like Dayton, Springfield is a hardworking, resilient community. They deserve leaders who are focused on solutions, not politics.”
Haiti is one of the countries designated under Temporary Protected Status by the Department of Homeland Security. An estimated 12,000-15,000 Haitian Immigrants have moved to Springfield, Ohio to take advantage of job opportunities. Springfield has also become the target for threats following the recent media coverage.
