Brown sworn in as new state representative of Ohio's 20th House District
Accompanied by family at the Ohio Statehouse today, Richard Brown, a lawyer from Canal Winchester, Ohio, was today sworn in as state representative of the 20th House District, which encompasses the southeastern portion of Franklin County. The House Democratic Caucus voted on seating Brown today during session after a House panel recommended Brown to replace former State Rep. Heather Bishoff (D-Blacklick).
“We are excited to welcome Richard Brown into the Ohio House Democratic Caucus,” said Democratic Leader Fred Strahorn (D-Dayton). “With his extensive legal background and long record of community service, we look forward to working with Rep. Brown as we continue to fight for improved schools, higher wages and stronger communities.”
As an attorney practicing private law for over 35 years, Brown has an AV peer rating, the highest for attorneys. He also has seven years of experience as a Hearing Examiner for the Ohio Department of Commerce in more than one hundred fifty matters, presiding over and deciding administrative cases and writing decisions.
“I am honored to be appointed as state representative of the twentieth district,” said Brown. “I’m confident that my experience as a lawyer and community leader will enable me to be an effective voice for my constituents at the Statehouse. Ohioans deserve a promising future with fair wages, equal economic opportunities and quality education, and I am dedicated to working toward these goals.”
Brown received a Bachelor of Arts and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Cincinnati. He later earned his Juris Doctorate from The Ohio State University College of Law. Brown is a member of the American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, Columbus Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, and was selected as “Best Lawyer” by Columbus CEO Magazine from 2010-2017. Brown has also served on the Columbus Bar Association’s Admission to the Bar Committee for over thirty years.
Brown lives in Canal Winchester, where he owns and runs his own legal practice and where he and his wife, Suzanne M. Brown, raised their three children. A resident for over 20 years, he is deeply involved in the local community and served for many years as a youth baseball coach and president of the Canal Winchester Diamond Club, the organization responsible for overseeing fundraising efforts for the high school baseball program.
