Democrats Criticize Ohio Ballot Board for Failure to Fix Issue 1 Ballot Language

COLUMBUS – Today, State Rep. Elliot Forhan (D-South Euclid) and Senator Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) criticized the Ohio Ballot Board for its failure to properly fix the ballot language for Issue 1, despite a directive by the Ohio Supreme Court to correct issues raised by the One Person One Vote coalition.

“Recently, Republican justices on the Ohio Supreme Court rejected the most important proposed changes to the ballot-issue language. Now, the Ohio Ballot Board failed to take advantage of a second chance to fix Issue 1 by continuing to exclude an explanation of the existing law in the ballot-issue language and maintaining a biased title. Voters this August will be misguided, misled, and deceived at the ballot box by the Secretary of State, and therefore, it is the duty of every Ohioan to inform themselves, vote no, and avoid this attempt to subvert democracy,” said Rep. Forhan.

“Frank LaRose hid behind four Justices’ robes today,” said Sen. DeMora. “He continues to push misleading and deliberately incomplete ballot language in hopes of conning the voters. But on August 8, the people of Ohio will defeat Issue 1 and expose LaRose as the fraud that he is.”

Issue 1 will be on the ballot for the upcoming statewide special election on August 8, 2023. This ballot issue will raise the passage threshold for citizen-initiated constitutional amendments from 50%+1 to 60% and increase the requirements to place such an initiative on the ballot.
