COLUMBUS — State Rep. Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) today commends Mayor Shammas Malik of Akron for signing the recent Ohio Mayor's Alliance’s letter to Governor DeWine calling for solutions to gun violence and youth access to firearms. Mayor Malik joined a coalition of mayors from Ohio’s 31 largest cities to voice their concerns with the ongoing gun violence epidemic harming Ohio’s citizens.

“I am pleased that Mayor Malik has signed onto this initiative to promote gun safety and commonsense regulation in Ohio,” said Rep. Weinstein. “The importance of monitoring lost and stolen guns and their recovery, as well as distributing information about best gun safety practices, cannot be overstated. I hope this letter will encourage other lawmakers to pursue much needed solutions to the gun epidemic currently plaguing our communities.”

The letter includes five solution-oriented recommendations for combating gun violence, including calls for research support, promoting gun violence awareness, enhancing law enforcement data sharing, and re-engaging legislative leaders on needed state law changes.

As part of its People First agenda, House Democrats have introduced several legislative solutions around promoting gun safety measures supported by a bipartisan majority of Ohioans.
