Rep. Weinstein Announces Summit County Has Received $843K in Brownfield Assessment Awards
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) Tuesday announced that Summit County has received $843K through the Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program to help clean up and redevelop hazardous brownfield sites, creating new employment and development opportunities.
“This vital funding is critical in helping us assess and address contamination in brownfields, setting the stage for future redevelopment in Summit County. I look forward to securing further support to turn these sites into valuable assets that will drive economic growth in our community,” said Rep. Weinstein.
The Summit County Land Reutilization Corporation has been awarded funding to initiate Phase 1 of the brownfield remediation program, which focuses on assessment, for the following projects:
- 999 S Main, Akron: $102,121
- 1025-1035 Sweitzer, Akron: $299,122
- 1367 Newton, Akron: $109,502
- 1594 Main, Peninsula: $139,103
- 1830 S Arlington, Akron: $193,350
Each project entails a comprehensive investigation of soil, groundwater, and structures to identify contamination and determine the best approach for preparing the sites for future use.
The announcement includes approximately $102.4M for 35 cleanup and remediation projects and roughly $4.5M for 26 assessment projects across 22 counties. Funds awarded will help assess and clean up industrial, commercial, and institutional brownfield sites that have been abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum.
The Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program is funded by the Ohio General Assembly as part of the current operating budget, which Rep. Weinstein supported and voted in favor of.
