COLUMBUS – State Rep. Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) today announced the Akron Regional Tech Hub as one of the 12 tech hubs in the nation to receive federal funds to support the advancement of sustainable polymer-related technology.

“By creating good-paying jobs, fostering sustainable technological innovation, and re-affirming Ohio's manufacturing legacy, I am confident that this investment will have a transformative impact for all Ohioans, particularly those of us in the Northeast,” said Rep. Weinstein. “I would like to thank the Biden administration, Senator Sherrod Brown, Congresswoman Emilia Sykes, and all the local leaders that have worked hard in a collaborative matter to bring these funds home. I am proud to say that the future of transportation, healthcare, and technology is happening here in Ohio.”

Polymers are used in every industrial sector from transportation to healthcare. Akron, also known as the "Rubber Capital of the World," accounts for over 150 polymer-related manufacturing companies in its metropolitan area. The funds awarded to Akron will be used to continue to build on this legacy and ensure Northeast Ohio remains a leader in the sustainable production of rubber and plastic.

Earlier this year, Rep. Weinstein sent a letter to the Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, in support of the Greater Akron Chamber's application for this proposal. Funding was made possible by The Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs) program, established as part of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
