COLUMBUS– State Rep. Monique Smith (D- Fairview Park) today introduced a House Resolution urging the U.S. Archivist to certify the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment in the United States Constitution.

The Equal Rights Amendment guarantees equal rights for all women in the United States. This amendment will ensure that the basic rights of women, girls, and marginalized genders are protected. Without the ERA, women will continue to face issues like sex discrimination, employment, and pay gaps.

“I fear for my daughter, all women, and anyone who can get pregnant in a state and country that is threatening their health and lives with draconian bans on abortion care,” said Rep. Monique Smith. “Certifying the Equal Rights Amendment is more important now than ever to ensure all women, girls, and marginalized genders have equal rights here in our country. In a truly free country, women have the right to make their own medical and family planning decisions. ”

This resolution urges the U.S. Archivist Debra Steidel to certify the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA has been ratified by the necessary three-fourths of the states and has been approved by two-thirds of both chambers of Congress. Ohio ratified the ERA on February 7, 1974.

The resolution awaits a bill number and assignment to a House Committee.
