COLUMBUS– State Rep. Monique Smith (D-Fairview Park) today applauded President Biden’s actions to work towards producing and importing more infant formula amid shortages in the United States, including a plan to invoke the Defense Production Act. This will direct suppliers of formula ingredients to expedite production and delivery to formula manufacturers.

“The infant formula shortage across the United States and especially in Ohio has caused parents to worry about how they will feed their babies,” said Rep. M. Smith. “Earlier this week, I drafted a resolution urging President Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act to address this shortage, so I am pleased to see him taking this necessary action to put formula back on the shelves.”

In addition, President Biden announced the creation of Operation Fly Formula, which will direct the Defense Department to use commercial cargo planes to important foreign FDA approved infant formula products to the US.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives also passed a pair of bills Wednesday night to combat the nationwide baby formula shortage. The House approved a measure to send $28 million to the Food and Drug Administration to help increase formula supply and prevent future shortages. 192 House Republicans voted against this legislation to help families and infants.

These actions come amidst a severe infant formula shortage in the United States that is a result of both supply chain issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recall of certain products.
