Rep. Monique Smith is currently serving her first term as State Representative for Ohio’s 16th House District, which includes the cities of Bay Village, Fairview Park, North Olmsted, Rocky River, and Westlake.
Growing up, Rep. Smith experienced the struggles and instability faced by some families as her mother worked to support two daughters alone while escaping domestic violence. Because of these experiences, Smith will prioritize the kind of support and protections for Ohio’s women and families that helped her to get ahead like full access to health care, affordable childcare and good public schools. Her priorities also include fair/higher wages as well as supporting safer communities through improved gun regulations and justice reforms.
Rep. Smith is also working to protect and expand access to quality health care, invest in public schools, make college more affordable for everyday Ohioans, and invest in job training and other pro-worker initiatives to grow wages and expand opportunity for working people right here in Ohio.
Rep. Smith previously served as City Councilmember for the City of Lakewood from 2010-2014. Prior to her time on council, Smith served in AmeriCorps and on a number of local improvement boards and clubs to build better communities and encourage participation in the democratic process. She has also worked in marketing and sales at several private sector companies, giving her the ability to combine the best of private and public sector ideas to better serve her community.
Rep. Smith was born in Ohio, graduated from The Ohio State University and has lived in the Greater Cleveland area with her husband for nearly 20 years. Smith, her husband and two children currently live in Fairview Park.
