State Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan (D-Youngstown) today announced the release of $280,880 in state funds to Youngstown State University (YSU) for campus-wide renovations and upgrades. The university will use the funds to contract with Youngstown-based design firm BSHM Architects, Inc., who will provide architectural design services for the project. The state funding was approved at today’s meeting by the state Controlling Board, a panel tasked with oversight of state spending.

“YSU has long been a pillar of excellence, both academically and in providing students a home away from home,” says Lepore-Hagan. “This state investment will not only help YSU continue to provide a quality education and a modern, inviting campus to students and the community, but will support a leading local business and contribute to our local economy here in the Mahoning Valley.”

The state dollars will help pay for renovations and upgrades to classrooms, labs and various instructional spaces and academic areas in several buildings across the YSU campus. Planned upgrades include replacement of stationary equipment, such as sinks, benches, plumbing, etc., as well as floor and deck replacement, and electrical, HVAC, and technology upgrades.

From its inception in 1962, BSHM has been committed to innovative approaches in concept formulation and design solutions. With offices in Youngstown and Columbus, BSHM has contracted extensively with both collegiate and K-12 schools across the state, receiving over 40 design awards from various components of the American Institute of Architects.
