Lepore-Hagan: Public records show culture of corruption at ODE

Repeats call for independent investigation, Superintendent Ross' resignation

State Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan (D-Youngstown) today issued the following statement in response to the public records released by the Ohio Department of Education relating to the illegal charter school data scrubbing done by David Hansen, Gov. Kasich’s campaign manager’s husband:

“Superintendent Ross has already demonstrated his tenuous relationship with the truth, repeatedly lying about his direct involvement in the secret meetings to craft the state takeover of the Youngstown City Schools. Now we see that Ross and others at ODE employed a deliberate strategy to pre-emptively cover their tracks by avoiding creating any public records.”

“Even low-level ODE employees were aghast at the brazen abuse of power exercised by the top education officials under the direction of Superintendent Ross. Given the pervasive culture of corruption, can the same department accused of scrubbing records really be trusted to provide accurate records of its own wrongdoing? We need an outside, independent investigation to uncover the full truth and hold folks accountable. In the meantime, Ross should resign immediately on the grounds of failed leadership and enabling – if not abetting – a culture of corruption.”
