State Rep. Michael Sheehy (D-Toledo) today announced his appointment as Ohio’s representative on the Great Lakes Legislative Caucus (GLLC) Executive Committee, which represents all eight states and two Canadian provinces in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin.

In addition to serving on the GLLC’s Executive Committee, Sheehy serves on the caucus’s Task Force on Lead, which is responsible for implementing the caucus’s action plan to reduce the population’s exposure to lead in drinking water.

“Serving in the Great Lakes Legislative Caucus has given Ohio a seat at table as the region works to preserve and restore our precious Great Lakes,” said Sheehy, who has served on GLLC since 2015. “Sharing innovative ideas with such a diverse and dedicated coalition of public servants has been so rewarding, and one that I hope will bring national attention and resources back to our Great Lake Erie.”

Sheehy has previously sponsored multiple resolutions, adopted by the GLLC, to support binational efforts to reduce phosphorus runoff into western Lake Erie. In 2018, Sheehy represented the GLLC at the Great Lakes Economic Forum of the Council of the Great Lakes Region.

GLLC’s Executive Committee will direct the caucus’s activities, focusing on identifying priority issues related to water consumption, aquatic invasive species, toxic substances, nutrient pollution, and coastal communities. Some specific objectives include assuring the availability of safe, clean, affordable drinking water; encouraging infrastructure improvements to reduce nutrient runoff, including the installation of green infrastructure; and supporting the sustainable economic development of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence coastal communities, including the restoration and preservation of habitat.

Through its mix of programming, advocacy, and other activities, the GLLC provides a forum for the regional exchange of ideas and information on key issues that impact the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.

The Council of State Governments (CSG) Midwestern Office supports and provides staffing services for GLLC, which is funded in part by a grant from the Joyce Foundation. CSG is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association serving all three branches of state government.
