Rep. Mary Lightbody (D-Westerville) spoke yesterday during the 2021 Ohio Public Interest Environmental Law Conference regarding the water impacts of the oil and gas industry. She was joined by Dr. Julie Weatherington-Rice for a discussion of the Impacts of the oil and gas industry on the waters of Ohio.
“I appreciated the opportunity to speak during the Ohio Public Interest Environmental Law Conference yesterday. It is of vital importance that everyone has access to clean, safe and accessible water. As a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I have the responsibility of reviewing legislation concerning oil and gas and have the opportunity to thoughtfully engage with bill sponsors, opponents, and proponents. I am concerned that the legislation pending would allow for the sale of brine as a commodity, and remove the oversight and care for the environment currently provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. I am working on legislation that would provide better protections for the water of Ohio and appreciate sharing information about our work in the House with the conference attendees,” said Rep. Lightbody.
