Rep. Lightbody: Misguided bailout costly for consumers, Ohio's clean energy future

State Rep. Mary Lightbody (D-Westerville) today issued a statement in opposition to House Bill (HB) 6, a Republican-sponsored bill to bail out Ohio’s nuclear power plants and subsidize two additional coal-fired power plants that service the state. The bill also guts Ohio’s renewable and energy efficiency standards, which opponents say will hurt job growth in emerging clean energy industries.

“There is a significant need to invest in renewable energy initiatives for Ohio’s future,” said Rep. Lightbody. “Energy efficiency initiatives and an emphasis on renewables should have been our focus under this bill, instead of working to prop up failing nuclear power plants and a coal-powered plant in Indiana. Consider the unprecedented rainfall and impact on agriculture, as well as flooding in low-lying areas. To help our communities compete in a 21st century economy, we must do everything we can to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global climate change.”

More than 112,000 Ohioans currently work in the clean energy sector, ranking 8th in the country and 3rd in the region.

After passing the House, HB 6 now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
