COLUMBUS – State Representative Laura Lanese (R-Grove City) yesterday gave remarks on behalf of the Ohio House of Representatives during Ohio’s 40th annual Holocaust Commemoration. The event was hosted by the Governor’s office and Ohio Jewish Communities.
Lanese’s topic of discussion was the 75th anniversary of Allied troops liberating Nazi concentration camps.
“I greatly appreciate the opportunity provided by Speaker Householder, Ohio Jewish Communities and the Governor’s office to discuss the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the death camps by American troops,” said Lanese. “Many years ago, I sought out the opportunity to visit Dachau, Nuremburg and Normandy to better understand the Holocaust and the American military’s role in the liberation of these death camps while I was serving in the National Guard. As I stood at the gates of Dachau, I tried to imagine the horror of the American soldiers who discovered these camps. But I couldn’t.”
Lanese continued, “I’ve read through accounts of the military members who liberated the death camps, and I’ve been struck by their commentary about the trauma they suffered by just witnessing the inconceivable brutality and inhumanity suffered within those gates. General Eisenhower ordered any liberator within the vicinity of these camps to visit and make witness to the atrocities lying within. He wanted them to go back to their small towns, to their big cities across the country and tell the world what they saw so that no one should ever forget.”
“And that’s why we’re here today. To make sure no one ever forgets,” concluded Lanese.
The program welcomed the following guests: David Heller, board chair of Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Governor Mike DeWine, Dr. Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University, Dr. Amy Acton, director of Ohio Department of Health, General Deborah Ashenhurst and Rabbi Josh Brown, Temple Israel, Akron.
Representative Lanese is in her second term serving Ohio’s 23rd District, which covers portions of southwestern Franklin County, including Grove City, parts of Brown, Jackson and Prairie townships, and part of Hilliard. She is a member of the Ohio House leadership team, serving as Assistant Majority Whip.
