State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) today sent a letter to Speaker Larry Householder (R-Glenford) calling for transparency and clarity on the House’s handling of coronavirus cases. Last week, House HR staff misidentified a Miranda staffer in its attempt to respond to potential coronavirus exposure among Republican staff. Democrats said that had the mistake not occurred, they would have been kept in the dark entirely.

COLUMBUS—State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) issued a statement today following Gov. DeWine’s executive order to require facemasks in Hamilton County. Hamilton County is one of 12 counties, including Clermont, Fairfield, Lorain, Pickaway, Summit, Wood, Butler, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Montgomery and Trumbull, that are subject to the governor’s mask mandate. Each of the counties falls within Level 3 of the state’s new Public Health Advisory System, which was unveiled July 2. Level 3 indicates very high exposure and spread of coronavirus.

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) today signed onto a concurrent resolution urging Congress to designate June 19th a paid federal holiday. This date is to be known as Juneteenth Independence day in recognition of June 19, 1865, when news of the end of slavery reached the southwestern states two months after the end of the American Civil War.

COLUMBUS—Yesterday, State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) and fellow Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to Ohio Department of Education Superintendent Paolo DeMaria urging that he follow the original intent of Congress when it passed the CARES Act to provide support and target relief to students who need it most. The request follows conflicting guidance from the U.S. Department of Education that states CARES Act funds should instead be distributed to all students regardless of their family’s income.

House Democrats today voted against House Bill 425, a GOP-backed bill that would modify concealed carry laws, eliminating the requirement for licensees to promptly notify law enforcement of their permit and if they are carrying. The bill also eliminates penalties for failure to notify, which opponents say will lead to confusion and potentially dangerous escalation—especially for people of color.
