COLUMBUS – Minority Whip Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) today recognized Equal Pay Day, the day which the average working woman in America must work into the next calendar year to make what their male counterparts did the previous year.

On March 24, 2021, Rep. Miranda and former state representative Stephanie Howse re-introduced the Ohio Equal Pay Act. HB 232 would require employers to provide equal pay and opportunity in the workplace regardless of gender, encourage transparency in the workplace and empower employees to negotiate for the earnings they deserve.

“The Ohio Equal Pay Act is long overdue to close the gender and racial wealth gap,” said Rep. Miranda. “All working Ohioans deserve to have equal opportunity and economic justice so that Ohio is a business and worker-friendly state.”

Overall, women earn just 82 cents for every dollar the average man earns. That is not accounting for the statistics that show that Black women earn $0.58, Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander women earn $0.75, Native American women earn $0.50, and Latina women earn $0.49 for every dollar a white man makes.

The Ohio Equal Pay Act had its first hearing in the House Commerce and Labor Committee on June 22, 2021, but has had no additional hearings since.
