COLUMBUS— State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) today announced the House passage of House Bill (HB) 367, bipartisan legislation to require the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) to make a specified recommendation for a job description for school counselors employed by public schools.

“I am excited to see HB 367 finally pass the House. Too often, our school counselors are forgotten, relegated to administrative tasks that take away from the very important work they do. While this legislation is permissive in nature, it serves as a strong reminder that school counselors are highly trained individuals specially equipped to assist in the development and growth of our children. I am proud to ensure the resources our schools have are used as adequately as possible,” said Rep. Miranda.

HB 367 will require ODE to create standards for school counselors based on the standards for school counselors most recently adopted by the State School Board of Education. This legislation also specifies that 80 percent of counselors’ duties must be direct or indirect services to students and 20 percent of school counselors’ duties must be program planning or school support activities. Additionally, the bill requires at least one ODE employee to serve as liaison for school counselors across Ohio.

The bill now heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
