Calls for action on Democratic legislation to ensure justice for survivors of sexual violence and abuse

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) issued a statement today after the Ohio Supreme Court issued a ruling that narrows the legal definition of rape in Ohio.

“This ruling clearly demonstrates that Ohio’s current sexual assault laws are outdated and do not adequately support survivors of sexual violence and abuse,” said Rep. Miranda. “The legislature must take immediate action on Democratic legislation that will provide a path towards the justice all survivors deserve.”

In April 2021, Rep. Miranda introduced House Bill (HB) 266, which would eliminate the statute of limitations for criminal and civil sex crimes. HB 266 was referred to the House Criminal Justice committee, but has not yet received a first hearing.

Additional Democratic legislation to reform Ohio’s criminal justice system and expand opportunities for survivors of sexual violence and abuse to seek the justice they deserve include HB 199 to remove the cap on damages for cases of sexual violence and HB 121 to eliminate Ohio’s spousal exemptions for sex offenses.
