COLUMBUS- Today, State Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan (D-Youngstown) and House Minority Whip Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) responded to proponent testimony on H598, extreme legislation that would criminalize abortion in Ohio, without exceptions for rape, incest and health of the mother.

“HB 598 is extreme. Ohio is once again leading the nation in terrible legislation. The supermajority party in Columbus is giving a platform to radical ideas that are completely unpopular and out-of-touch with the majority of Ohioans,” said Rep. Lepore-Hagan. “Women are people. We are not your baby-making machines. We do not want to be thrown in jail, along with our doctors, for accessing healthcare. We deserve the freedom to make decisions over our own bodies.”

“It is absolutely appalling that Republican lawmakers are continuously trying to control women’s bodies. As a sexual assault survivor, no one should ever be forced to do anything with their bodies without their consent,” said Minority Whip Miranda. “Women are people who deserve the same freedom to make decisions about their bodies and their healthcare. This bill will put the lives of Ohioans, especially women and survivors of rape and incest, in danger.”

Ohio joins states passing or attempting to pass so called “trigger ban” laws designed to go into effect if Roe v Wade is overturned. Democrats say the continued attempts by Ohio Republicans to ban abortion and criminalize women and healthcare underscores the need for their Reproductive Freedom Act. This proposed amendment to Ohio’s Constitution would ensure that all Ohioans are able to obtain surgical and medical abortion services. Additionally, the amendment would codify the right to access and use contraceptive devices and medications.

“If we do not pass the Reproductive Freedom Act and enshrine our rights over our own bodies into Ohio’s Constitution, these extremists will take them away, without any exceptions,” said Rep. Lepore-Hagan. “They are determined to impose their extreme political views on the majority of Ohioans who disagree with them. They must be stopped.”
