Leader Sykes observes Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month
House Democratic Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) today recognized Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, observed annually in June to raise awareness and educate about Alzheimer’s disease.
“Every Ohioan deserves a chance at a better life and a brighter future,” said Leader Sykes. “By promoting awareness of and elevating the conversation about Alzheimer’s, it is my hope to encourage more medical research and to better support patients and their loved ones who are suffering.”
Alzheimer’s is a fatal disease that kills nerve cells and tissue in the brain, affecting an individual’s ability to remember, think and plan. Worldwide, there are an estimated 47 million people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and this number is expected to grow to 76 million by 2030. During the month of June, the Alzheimer’s Association raises awareness by hosting events and wearing the color purple.
