Democrats say Akron police must purchase dash cameras to ensure transparency, prevent future tragedies

COLUMBUS— State Reps. Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron), Tavia Galonski (D-Akron), and Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) sent a letter to Mayor Horrigan and Police Chief Mylett of Akron today asking them to send an amended application to the Department of Public Safety to be able to use American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds to purchase dash cameras for the Akron Police Department. The call for cameras follows the shooting death of Jayland Walker, an unarmed Black man, by Akron police last month.

“In order to mend police community relations, it is imperative that we increase transparency and accountability. We must ensure peace officers have the tools, technology and resources needed to safely protect our communities. Currently, the Akron Police Department does not have an adequate inventory of dash and body cameras. We believe funding for these essential technological upgrades is needed to ensure transparency and hopefully prevent tragic events like the killing of Mr. Walker,” wrote Democrats.
