Rep. Leland Urges Immediate Action on Gov. DeWine's Gun Safety Proposals

August 6, 2019
David Leland News

State Rep. David Leland (D-Columbus) today released the following statement in response to Gov. DeWine’s call for bipartisan action to address gun safety for all Ohioans:

“I applaud the Governor’s proposals to take aggressive action to protect Ohioans. As Minority Leader Sykes (D-Akron) said earlier today: ‘Democrats stand ready to work together on the commonsense proposals of universal background checks and red flag protections.’

“There is, however, one thing missing from the Governor’s proposals, and that is the sense of urgency to start working on these proposals now!

“As the ranking member on the House Criminal Justice Committee, I am ready to begin working on legislation immediately – not in over a month when we are scheduled to come back to the Statehouse for normal business. I encourage Gov. DeWine to call on Speaker Householder (R-Glenford) and Senate President Obhof (R-Medina) to begin the legislative process immediately.

“Gov. DeWine, at the end of his remarks, said, ‘We can pull together to do meaningful things to protect lives.’ I fully agree, but if we are really going to “do something”, the time to act is now.”
