Scout's Honor Bill Passed by Ohio Senate
COLUMBUS - State Rep. Jessica Miranda (D-Forest Park) today announced that House Bill (HB) 35, the bipartisan “Scout’s Honor Law” was passed by the Ohio Senate today unanimously. HB 35 eliminates the civil statute of limitations for child sexual abuse in bankruptcy cases. This allows survivors and participants in The Boy Scouts of America settlement to receive the full amount owed to them.
“I am so proud of all the hard work and dedication that moved HB 35 to this incredible milestone. Nearly 2,000 survivors put their trust in me to shepherd this bill through the Statehouse. I am thankful for that trust and thankful for the progress we have made for survivors. Survivors of childhood sexual abuse deserve justice and today, we are one step closer” said Rep. Miranda.
HB 35 was passed in the Ohio House back in March of this year 95-0. Concerns grew as the settlement for survivors opened and Ohio survivors were unable to complete the final steps without the passage of the bill. An emergency clause was placed on the bill, and it became a priority for the Senate Judiciary Committee.
HB 35 will now be sent back to the Ohio House to approve the emergency clause placed on the bill. Survivors will then need Governor DeWine to sign Scout’s Honor into law before they may, finally, find justice.
