Rep. Miranda's Scout's Honor Bill Signed Into Law
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) announced today that House Bill (HB 35), the Scout’s Honor Law, has been signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine. This law eliminates the statute of limitations for victims of childhood sexual abuse participating in a bankruptcy settlement. This bill was crafted so that the survivors of abuse from the Boy Scouts of America may participate in the national bankruptcy settlement. Ohio survivors can now receive 100% of their settlement.
“I want to thank all the survivors who put their trust in me to carry this legislation through the Statehouse. I am elated that we were able to get this done in time. I hope that participating in this settlement will bring some peace to the survivors. I am thankful to my joint-sponsor Representative Seitz, Speaker Stephens, President Huffman, and Governor DeWine for their willingness to help survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I am hoping that this is the first step in a statute of limitations reform in Ohio,” said Rep. Miranda.
HB 35 was unanimously passed by the Senate on September 27th, then unanimously passed by the House on October 11, 2023. It was signed by Governor DeWine on October 12 and has immediately become law in Ohio.
