COLUMBUS – The State Controlling Board today approved the release of $80,000 for the purchase of an additional 15.07 acres of land to the Whipple State Nature Preserve, announced State Representative Brian Baldridge (R-Winchester).

“I’d like to thank the ODNR for their work on acquiring this funding,” said Baldridge. “Adams County is a beautiful part of Ohio and by the development of a new trial with this land, it’ll be another way Ohioans can enjoy everything the 90th House District has to offer.”

The 15.07 acres will provide access to the Beckett tract, land that was purchased for its dolomite cliffs with a natural arch, 9 state rare plant species and prairie, but is inaccessible by the current public trails.

In addition to providing access to the Beckett tract, the land has mesic and dry upland forests, scrub pine groves that could be restored to prairie.

The Whipple State Nature Preserve was founded in 1989 by a donation of 248 acres from Robert A. Whipple. Since then, it has expanded to 448 acres in area.

The next State Controlling Board meeting is scheduled for June 13.
