COLUMBUS – State Reps. Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus) and Terrence Upchurch (D-Cleveland) Wednesday introduced legislation to help assist those who have defaulted on their rent payments, by requiring landlords to provide tenants with written notice of a rent default, including the amount owed, within 60 days of the default. Landlords would then be prohibited from filing for eviction until at least 90 days after providing notice and after offering the tenant an opportunity to negotiate a payment plan. If a tenant complies with the terms of an agreed-upon plan, the landlord would be barred from pursuing eviction.
