COLUMBUS - House Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington) Wednesday honored military children at Washington Elementary School during Month of the Military Child.

“It is important to take a moment to celebrate the resiliency of our military-connected children and share our appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our country,” said Leader Russo. “While these children may not explicitly choose a life of service, they live it commendably, facing unique challenges such as separations, deployments and frequent moves. Their strength and resiliency is inspirational, and I am proud to recognize Ohio’s military children this salient month.”

The Purple Star Award, established by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, acknowledges schools that demonstrate an understanding of the extraordinary challenges faced by military children and go above and beyond to provide them with the resources and support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Each year, this prestigious recognition is awarded to reflect Ohio schools with steadfast commitment to supporting military students and families.

This year, Washington Elementary of Hilliard City Schools was awarded this distinct honor for its dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for military families, ensuring that every student feels valued and supported. With this distinction, Washington Elementary joins Davidson and Bradley High Schools, two fellow Hilliard City Schools, in exemplifying the district's commitment to serving students who are members of a military family.
