Cutrona Announces Grant to Reduce Youth Violence and Substance Abuse within the Mahoning Valley

State Rep. Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) announces that the Ohio Department of Youth Services for Positive Youth Development has approved the Mahoning County Educational Service Center’s (MCESC) Title II Formula Grant. The grant’s intent is to significantly reduce youth violence and substance abuse throughout the region.

Back in July, Cutrona wrote a letter in support of the initiative to the grants administer of the Ohio Department of Youth Services.

“The grant will provide funding for the MCESC’s Career Counseling Team and allow them to be trained in Dr. Botvin’s LifeSkills Program,” wrote Cutrona. “They will be trained in the Foundation Training as well as the Training of Trainers Workshop, allowing for sustainability throughout all districts for future academic years. Upon completion of the trainings, the MCESC Career Counseling Team will be able to train district staff members, such as guidance counselors, administration, and teachers.”

Cutrona addressed that parental training will also be accessible through the LifeSkills Parent Program, which offers parental involvement and education to help with at-risk youth.

Cutrona also noted that the grant will provide funding for other materials and events to enhance the LifeSkills Program. Additionally, it will provide a unique experience for students and staff who participate in the LifeSkills Program to attend a completion celebratory event.

The students who are selected to participate in the LifeSkills Program will be selected based on various factors including but not limited to attendance, grades, and disciplinary reports that are to be collected from each district through administration, student resource officers, and staff.

Cutrona signified that a part of the grant’s purpose pertains to the YMCA’s Leaders Club.

“This will provide these students role models and mentors who can have a positive impact on their lives as they grow to become a positive and influential member of the community,” Cutrona added.

The Ohio Department of Youth Services approved the grant earlier this week.
